Many people are now using Zoom to stay connected to their family members and business contacts during the COVID-19 pandemic. With cyber-security issues on the rise, several people are now asking, how safe is Zoom?
According to an article in Popular Mechanics, Zoom has seen a user increase of 67% since the beginning of 2020, making it a new target in cyber-security, including reported cases of "Zoomboming." In particular, teachers are reporting issues of "disruptive (although not criminal) behavior where users broadcast pornographic, racist, or otherwise vitriolic content."
In response, Zoom posted a recent blog providing tips on "How To Keep The Party Crashers From Crashing Your Zoom Event."
Tips include:
- When creating your meetings, generate a unique meeting ID rather than using your personal ID.
- Manage screen sharing so only the host has permission to share their screen.
- Manage your participants by locking the meeting after everyone has joined or remove participants who are not supposed to be in attendance.
- Generate a password for all of your meetings.
- Don’t post meeting IDs or links on social media.
For more information on how to apply these tips, please review Zoom's March 20, 2020 blog.
Zoom is a great tool to utilize communication during a time when so many are now working remotely; however, Advocate Capital, Inc. is doing all we can to ensure we take the necessary safety measures.
