According to Tatia Gordon-Troy’s Attorneyatwork.com article, servant leadership is a type of management that places the needs of your law firm team first.
More and more managers are reconsidering how they manage their law firm team during “the great resignation.” Most attorneys likely already manage their team this way, but here are a few ways you can ensure you are implementing servant leadership every day.
Principles of Servant Leadership.
Servant leadership has ten principles that you can utilize to ensure you are using this type of leadership. A few of the principles are empathy, self-awareness, listening, and commitment to the growth of people. You likely already try to lead your team with these principles, but sometimes it can slip through the cracks. Be mindful and try to find ways to practice these principles, if not daily, at least weekly.
Here are some ways you can practice these principles:
- Ask your team for suggestions, input, and feedback.
- Encourage your team to observe and follow your actions for certain parts of running your law firm.
- Find ways to support your team.
- Find areas to coach and guide your team instead of lecturing.
Actions and Teamwork.
Working together as a team is essential for you and your law firm to be successful. As a leader, you want to foster teamwork and show the importance of working together. Find opportunities for your team to help each other on projects. Also, you will want to find ways to show your team that having empathy and listening to other team members benefits everyone. Leading with principles of servant leadership will help your team to replicate that amongst your firm.
