We wait all year for the Holiday Season. Family, friends, and loved ones all coming together to eat, drink and laugh. However, these are also the reasons why most New Years resolutions involve either dieting and/or exercise!
It is important to enjoy yourselves during this time of year, but also responsibly. Here are some tips to get through this season guilt free!
- Everything in Moderation – Do not be afraid to enjoy your food during the holiday season! Though those baked goods and large varieties of food can entice you; just note that you can still enjoy most them in the proper portion control. Per Healthline, overeating is a main cause of weight gain.
- Say “Yes” to the Veggies – Vegetables are not only good for you, but they are a key component to most holiday meals. Whether they are set out as snacks or included in the main course; they are a healthy way to enjoy your meal. Try to avoid vegetables that have been fried or prepared with refined sugars. According to the American Heart Association, they will also keep you feeling full for longer.
- Take a Break – We have all been there, we finish our plate of food and we want more food. Take 5-10-minute break before going to get your seconds and you may realize that you are fuller than you had anticipated. Consumer Reports says taking a walk is also a nice way to spend time with the family and be active.
- Drink Water – Numerous studies have shown the benefits of drinking water and how it correlates to dieting. Per Medical News Today, studies have shown that water can act as an appetite suppressant, as well as, increase the rate that we burn calories. Water also has 0 calories, which will reduce your overall calorie intake.
- Sleep – The holiday season is also about connecting with friends and family. This can relate to busy schedules and less rest. Healthline states that when you do not get enough sleep, you will crave more food, which can lead to weight gain. Aim for 8 hours per night to guard against mindless eating. Less sleep also decreases your metabolism, thus burning calories at a slower rate.
